Glossary Definition: CPM (Cost per thousand impressions)

By Michael Moncur (November 16, 2004)

CPM (Cost per thousand impressions)

Cost per thousand impressions. In Web advertising, the amount an advertiser will pay for each 1000 ads shown. Some ad campaigns are sold by CPM, while others are priced by click or another measure. For non-CPM campaigns, effective CPM is a useful measure of a campaign's profitability.

(CPM is an advertising term that predates the Internet, and the "M" means thousand, not million.)
